    Lonely Crusade, First Edition
    Chester Himes
Alfred A Knopf: New York, 1945

Stated First Edition. Rust cloth blind stamped on front cover, gilt titles and decoration on spine. Very good in a good dust jacket. Head and tail of spine turned in, legendary Steimatsky’s bookseller’s stamp on front pastedown, pages are clean and unmarked, binding sound; price clipped dust jacket is chipped along top and bottom edges and now protected in an archival mylar cover.

Chester Himes, famous for his Harlem Detective series, first wrote this important book on the influx of black in-migrants to Los Angeles. This part of American history, the tail of end the Great Migration, is getting the attention it deserves with the popularity of Isabel Wilkerson’s work, ‘The Warmth of Other Suns’ and would be a great compliment to read in tandem.

Himes started writing in prison, where he was serving time for armed robbery. During this time his short stories were published in national magazines, including Esquire. Upon his release, he came into contact with Langston Hughes, who facilitated HImes’s contacts with the world of literature and publishing.
